Sarah Holmes

Sarah Holmes Nabangardi, a Warlpiri woman, was born in Tennant Creek in 1946, relocating with her family to Ali Curung shortly after. Sarah spent her childhood studying at Alekarenge school while learning about traditional life, bush tucker and Warlpiri culture from her family. She went on to work at the Ali Curung Health Clinic for many years. After marriage and raising children and grandchildren, Sarah joined Arlpwe Art and Culture Centre in 2011.
Over her painting career, Sarah Holmes Nabangardi has played with an array of styles and techniques, with her practice primarily invested in studies of country around Ali Curung. Sarah experimented with pattern-based representations of country, colours studies inspired by different seasons or locales and more figurative representations of the hilly landscape around Iytwelepenty (the Davenport Ranges).
Recently, Sarah has been drawn to painting arial depictions of country using a limited palette of oxide yellows and whites against black to create compiles of fine lines to represent, floodways, sandhills and soakages.
